NEWS! Book Report and Essay Contest!

In an effort to promote and motivate students to read books of their own choosing, all sixth grade students are required to read at least 1 book and complete a book report sheet by Wednesday, June 16th. This book report will count as a 100 pt. quiz grade. To motivate students to read even more, students can read up to 5 points more for every book and book report they complete thereafter!

On Friday, every sixth grader took out a novel of their choice to read for this assignment. They were instructed to bring this book to EVERY class EVERY day, so that should their be time in any class, they can read! Students will also be given time to read in math lab.

See your LAL teacher if you'd like a second book report sheet!

Also, we have a new essay contest!!! This one is about the heroes that you might have at school!!! Here is the information: https://docs.google.com/a/fpks.org/Doc?docid=0ASU0zURZ1Bk_ZGNqNTd3bmRfNTNmODlzY21kNw&hl=en.

Explanatory Prompt Example

Below is a typed version of one student's explanatory prompt.

As Ronald Regan once said, "Troubles in the world would disappear if we were talking to one another instead of about each other." We should work out ourproblems by talking directly to each other, not starting rumors. For example, in every school, there is gossip that goes around.

In so many schools, there is gossip that spreads. Gossip is started to affect someone else. For example, if two friends have a fight and broke up the friendship, one friend might start gossiping to get back at the other. If we did what Mr. Reagan said and the two friends talked to each other about the situation, they wouldn't have talk about each other in a negative way. To stop and prevent gossip and rumors, problems have to be talked about.

For troubles to "disappear," we have to talk to others about a situation. For example, I fight a lot with my sister. Instead of having a fight and then her being mean to me, we have to talk it out. We need to find out what we were finding over and make a compromise. This means we need to agree on something we both like. If we do this, our troubles will disappear.

We need to talk to each other instead of about each other to make our troubles disappear. To work out problems, talk to someone, not about them. If we do what Ronald Reagan says, there will be less rumors and more problems solved calmly and peacefully.

To prepare, students can write practice prompts by using the four prewriting exercises on the back of their "explanatory prompt" handout.

***STUDENTS: Only 4 of 57 students attended yesterday's persuasive prompt review session. If you need additional help, please see the PowerPoint I posted yesterday.

*** Note to parents ***

Grades for the graded persuasive prompt were posted today. Students were given their graded responses back with comments and rubrics. If the grade was lower than a 75, I encouraged the students to attend a review prompt opportunity on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 SHARP! This review will NOT replace their original grade. It is an opportunity to do a timed write with teacher feedback.

As we prepare for NJASK, I strongly suggest that you sit down with your child and have them teach YOU about persuasive writing. Doing this will increase your child's ownership of this knowledge and help his or her self-esteem! This is a great review strategy for any student's preparation for the test!

Fantastic Friday!!

I hope you all have a great week and enjoy your weekend.

Though you have no official homework, I would suggest that you start updating your WIKI.  Final drafts will be due next Thursday and you will have a vocab test on units 7-9 next Friday, so use this time to get started!

I am really looking forward to reading those final copies! You are all so creative!

Here is my response to today's journal question (in OER style):

Which invention has had the most positive effect on the human race?

The Internet has had the most notable and positive effect on the human race because it has revolutionized daily life for nearly every person.  Information is more readily available than it ever was before.  A simple click and the world is at the fingertips of any one, anywhere whether they are a high-powered executive in business suit at his desk in Detroit or an inquisitive housewife in her bathrobe at her desktop in Des Moines.  The Internet has also changed the way we communicate.  Email and social networking sites keep us more in touch with one another.  This increase in communication has made us more informed citizens of the world because we are aware of the happenings all over our globe.  Our economy has also been directly affected by the Internet.  Successful Internet companies such as Google and EBay make their e-business thrive from any connection to the World Wide Web.  During this holiday season, I was especially thankful for this invention.  Snow storms had ravished the East Coast, putting a damper on my Christmas shopping.  It was no worry though because shopping on the Internet is a 24/7 business.  Humanity has certainly been affected by the positive influence of the Internet on our daily lives.  I doubt that many humans would want to return to a life without it.

Today's journal:
Do we learn more from our mistakes or our successes?

Though one might assume that learning happens more from mistakes, I believe that we learn more from successes than mistakes.  Successes validate our actions.  We learn that positive actions and reactions can result in positive consequences when we are successful.  Success also builds self-confidence.  I find that sometimes when someone makes a mistake, he or she cannot see the error of his or her ways.  Successes are easier to see.  When  I was in school, I learned this personally.  Math was always a struggle for me; however, once I began seeking extra help, I saw success.  Therefore, I learned that when I changed my behavior, the outcome changed in a positive way.  Unfortunately, though I had failed test after test, I had never changed my behavior before.  My success helped more than anything I did before.  Clearly, successes can be more educational than mistakes.

And, today's journal...
You had to assume the voice of Miss Masi and write a letter describing what she was would say about your strengths and weaknesses.  If Miss Masi were to write you a letter describing my strengths and weaknesses, here's what she would say:

Dear students,

I understand that you met Ms. Restaino today.  She told me how excited she is to be working with you.  I am sure you will get along with her very well.  I also thought you might want to be aware of some her strengths and weaknesses.

Ms. Restaino has several notable strengths.  She loves to write and writes quite often.  She has even published her own play! She has not, however, written very many children's stories, but she hopes to find time to do so soon.  Because of her background in drama, Ms. Restaino is also very theatrical.  You will notice she sometimes speaks in different accents.  British and Mid-Western accents are her favorites. But, don't worry, she'll switch back to her real voice eventually.

Everyone has weaknesses and Ms. Restaino is no exception.  You should know that she is an awful counter.  Math was never her strength! She will sometimes miscount handouts.  So, please help her out by giving her extras or letting her know when she has left someone else.  It is never done intentionally.  Ms. Restaino is also  easily distracted.  I know some of you like to tap your foot or click your pen.  She can hear anything though.  It is almost like she has super-sonic hearing!

I know this change will not be easy for you; however, please know that you are in good hands.  I will do my best to keep in touch.  And, I would like you to do your best to help Ms. Restaino.

Be good!

Sincerely,
Miss Masi
